Witches: The witches have skinny lips which shows the women side of them, but also they have beards which shows the men side. The witches are able to predict what is going to happen in the future to Macbeth and Banquo. They curse and say a spell to Banquo. They say that Macbeth is going to become the new king and Banquo will get a son, who will become the king also.
Macbeth: Macbeth is the main character that appears and he comes in after a war saying that it is finally over. He is also very well known to everyone. He gets a message that says he will become the king, and he is surprised because he heard that from the witches and they were correct. Macbeth is surprised and also happy to become the king.
Banquo: Banquo is a friend of Macbeth. The witches tell him that he will not be as great as Macbeth, but greater than others, not very happy but happier than others, and he is not going to become the king but he is going to get a son who will become the king. The witches put a spell on him saying bad things that will happen to him
Ross: Ross is a messenger who comes to where Macbeth is, to tell that Macbeth will become the king. He congratulates Macbeth because he is becoming the king. He supports the king very much.
Angus: Angus is also a messenger who came with Ross. He is a respecting man because he congratulates Macbeth for becoming the new king. He tells Macbeth that the thane of Cawdor has been captured by the enemy.
Outline the major plot evens in 1.3 - What happens?
1.3 starts off by the conversation between the three witches. They talk about the sailor's wife and how she insulted the witches. They also say that the sailor will be in bad luck because of that. After, Macbeth and Banquo enters. The witches put a spell on Banquo and Banquo doesn't get what they are talking about. Banquo asks them for their genders and who they are. The witches tell the future of both Macbeth and Banquo. They said that Macbeth is going to become the king and Banquo is going to get a king meaning he is going to get a son after. After the witches disappear, Angus and Ross comes in. They came to give the message saying that Macbeth became the thane of Cawdor. They congratulates Macbeth and tells him what happened to the old thane of Cawdor.
Explain the conflicts introduced in 1.3.
In 1.3 there are some conflicts and one of them is the witches being able to tell the future. They say that Macbeth will become the king and Banquo will not but will get one. This makes Banquo mad and jealose and Macbeth doesn't know what is going one. When Ross comes to Macbeth to tell him that he became the king, Macbeth was surprised that the witches were correct about how he would become the king. He was confused about it and thought it was not real.

What do we learn about Lady Macbeth in these scenes?
From 1.5 and 1.6 we can learn that Lady Macbeth is the wife of Macbeth. I think she is pretty evil because inside her she wants to become the queen very badly and wants Macbeth to do bad things to get that power. She says that the thane of Cawdor is not good enough for Macbeth. This shows us that she respects her husband but she wants more. She tells Macbeth that he should become the king by doing bad things. “Thane of Cawdor;' by which title, / before, these weird sisters saluted me, and referred / me to the coming on of time, with 'Hail, king that / shalt be!’” (Act 1 Scene 5 7-11)
How might Lady Macbeth answer the question “What is the meaning of life?” Explain your answer.
I think that Lady Macbeth will answer the question "What is the meaning of life?" by say things such as title and power is everything that a person should have. She wants her husband, Macbeth to become the king and she wants Macbeth to kill Duncan, the present king, in order to become the king. “Thane of Cawdor;' by which title, / before, these weird sisters saluted me, and referred / me to the coming on of time, with 'Hail, king that / shalt be!’” (Act 1 Scene 5 7-11)
Identify and write out two of Lady Macbeth’s lines that are particularly striking. Explain why you selected the lines.
“ Look like the time; bear welcome in your eye, / Your hand, your tongue: look like the innocent flower, / But be the serpent under't. He that's coming / Must be provided for: and you shall put / This night's great business into my dispatch;” (Act 1 Scene 5 Lines 64-67) These lines showed us how much evil inside Lady Macbeth has. She wants to kill a man just for power and title. The inner parts of her shows here. Maybe she just wants Macbeth to succeed but still thinking of killing someone is bad.
“That tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here, / And fill me from the crown to the toe top-full / Of direst cruelty! make thick my blood;” (Act 1 Scene 5 Lines 39-41) These lines were striking to me because Lady Macbeth looked like a very nice person while she was talking to Macbeth. However here she says that she wants to be a man in order to be able to kill the king for the power.

Word: Blood (Act 1 Scene 5 line 43)
Denotation: A red liquid carrying oxygen and carbon dioxide which people need to survive.
Connotation: The word Blood here is used in a negative thing because Lady Macbeth uses Blood to describe the death of the present king, Duncan. This shows she wants him to die in order to have the title and the power.

I think that Macbeth has decided to kill King Duncan by the end of Act 1 because of the pressure that Lady Macbeth gave to him saying that he should become a real man. Act 1 Scene 7 is a scene where Lady Macbeth and Macbeth have a whole conversation about becoming the king. Lady Macbeth convinces Macbeth that he should do it because he would be very happy when he gets the king's position. Macbeth is scared of doing it and doesn't want to do it, however Lady Macbeth pressures to do it.
Lines 32~36 : This shows that Macbeth doesn't want to be involved in this act because he is honored by the king and he says that he wants to enjoy this honor, and not throw it away.
Lines 42~45: This is where Lady Macbeth talks back to Macbeth when he says that he will not do it. Lady Macbeth makes a good point saying are you going to be a coward saying I can't over I want to? or do you want to have what you want to have? This shows that Lady Macbeth is trying to convince Macbeth to kill the king to get the king's position.
Lines 60~72: This is where Lady Macbeth says that they will never fail. Macbeth is afraid about failing and says "If we should fail?" and Lady Macbeth talks back strongly that they will never fail. She explains what's going to happen and therefore nothing would go wrong, which mad Macbeth think that it would be all good. She says that she will make the servants drunk and when they get caught they could blame the drunk servants.
After the discussion: My thought about why Macbeth had decided to kill King Duncan, didn't change. I thought and still think that Macbeth decides to kill the king because of the pressure that Lady Macbeth gave. Some students argued that it was his ambition that was making him decide to kill King Duncan, but i can see that Lady Macbeth was trying to convince Macbeth to kill him because Macbeth says that he doesn't want to do it because he was honored and scared about them failing. Lady Macbeth says that they will not fail and that he should become a man.

How does Macbeth react to the killing of Duncan? Why does he react this way?
Macbeth reacts to the killing of Duncan in a very scared way. He is not confident about it and he says that he did the wrong thing and he will be punished for it. He is scared about what will happen next to him. Macbeth is very sensitive about every single thing now. When he hear a sound he gets all nervous and scared. He couldn't think very well and he was the one who committed the crime, but now he regrets and thinks that he shouldn't have done it.

How does Lady Macbeth react to the killing of Duncan? Why does she react this way?
Lady Macbeth reacts to the killing of Duncan by saying that she is glad that her husband did this job. She was the one who convinced Macbeth to do it but she is scared at nights when she hears little sounds. Lady Macbeth is more calm than Macbeth and she tells what Macbeth should do next. She is not very scared of anything. She doesn't feel guilty that she killed the king. I think her internal feelings and external feeling are different. She is scared inside her body but doesn't want to show it outside her body and wants to keep it to her self.

Macbeth wants to recognize what is threatening his throne and he wants to know if Fleance and other Banquo's sons are going to get the throne.

Macduff is what stands in his way because he is suspicious of Macbeth about killing Duncan. He was in the war just to become the king and not to protect people. Also the first witch warns Macbeth that Macduff will not obey your orders therefore he is scared and afraid.
How does Macbeth attempt overcome the obstacles in his way?
He decides to kill Macduff because he is scared that they might find out. However, at the end of 4.1, Macduff is afraid of death and runs away to England.
What do the Witches want in this scene?
They want to confuse Macbeth and trick him. Hectate wants them to trick Macbeth because the witches shouldn't have told Macbeth about his future.

Macbeth changes a lot through out the book and in act 5 we can clearly see how he has changed. Firstly at the beginning of the book, we saw that Macbeth was a nice person and tried to avoid all the bad things. When Lady Macbeth first told him to kill King Duncan, he refused and didn't want to be involved with that crime. Also he didn't listen to what the witches told him. However in act 5 he gets all arrogant about the power he has. Now he listens to what the witches tell him and now he is all arrogant and cocky about the power he has.
"Thou wast born of woman but swords I smile at, weapons laugh to scorn, brandished by man that's of a woman born.”(5.7 lines 12 – 14)
“Go pinch your cheeks and bring some color back into your face, you cowardly boy. What soldiers, fool? Curse you!”(5.3 lines 15- 17)
Macbeth now doesn’t show his love towards Lady Macbeth. Before Act 5 he respected her and listened to what she was saying but now he doesn’t care about her anymore. When Lady Macbeth tells him and convinces him to kill Duncan, he says that he is doing it for her. However in Act 5, she dies and Macbeth doesn’t really show any surprised expressions. This show that he doesn’t care about lady Macbeth and that he now respect anyone.
"She should have died hereafter. There would have been a time for such a word. Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow Creeps in this petty pace from day to day To the last syllable of recorded time. And all our yesterdays have lighted fools The way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle. What is the main idea of the story?
The main idea of the story, Macbeth,is that by doing horrible stuffs such as committing a murder, will lead you to the wrong way. The story is about a thane called Macbeth and he talks to the witches at the beginning of the play. The witches tell him that he is going to become the thane of Cawdor and the king but Macbeth doesn't believe it. Macbeth becomes the thane of Cawdor making him think that the witches are right. Lady Macbeth wants to become the queen therefore she tells Macbeth to kill the present king, Duncan. Macbeth kills him and after he kills more and more people in order to stay away from getting caught. This shows that doing a horrible thing will be continuous which means that you will do it over and over again.
"It will have blood, they say. Blood will have blood. Stones have been known to move, and trees to speak. Augurs and understood relations have By magot pies and choughs and rooks brought forth The secret’st man of blood.—What is the night?" (Act 3 Scene 4 128 - 132)
What can we learn from these characters? Select one or two characters and explain your answer.
We can see that having the power can change a person, which we can see from the change of Macbeth. Macbeth was a pure person because he didn't really want to kill Duncan but he killed him because of Lady Macbeth. Because Lady Macbeth was too convincing he decided to kill Duncan. After the killing of Duncan, Macbeth gets the king's place and kills other people to avoid getting caught.

I can see a recurring image when Macbeth talks about the blood on his hands and that the sea will turn red when he dips his hands in them. This is because they want to wash the guilt and be all innocent. I also see recurring words of hand. This means the killing of everyone and that they want to wash the guilt.
